Catch me, Catch me, if you can!!

This past week was quite fun. We read three Gingerbread man stories that were varied in writing style and outcome. Several did not end well for the Gingerbread Man, unfortunately. However, more fun than that was the alternate endings that some of the kids wrote. They are hilarious and I hope to have them edited and up in the hallway for you to read this week. Friday, I was able to bring in some gingerbread man cookies and they were a hit!
This week we will be finishing up all of our quarter work before I need to do our report cards.  We will also be working on our Holidays around the World book.
Please remember that your child's Holiday Project is due on the 12th. We will be presenting them to each other that week. Also, if your child will be receiving an award at the Honor's Assembly next week, I will be sending a note home with your child. I wouldn't want you to miss it.
Be looking for more information on the Honor's Assembly and Holiday program next week. We are having a lot of fun rehearsing our song!
    Have a great week!

Welcome, Holiday Season!

The next three weeks will go faster than any other 3 weeks in the school year. We will be doing our regular math, reading and writing as well as studying Holidays and traditions from around the world. I will be sending home a family assignment that will involve your child and you discussing your family traditions during this time of year. I hope you will enjoy doing the activity with your child. Also, thanks to Ms. Reeve, we will be creating a Holidays around the world book to keep. We will also spend some time learning about motion in science as well as preparing for our holiday performance. We have a lot to do in just 3 short weeks. It's going to be a wonderful time!!
Have a super week!

It's all gravy.......

So here we are! One week and a few days shy of Thanksgiving break. We are looking forward to that, of course. But, we have a lot to do this week. We will be finishing up our study on suffixes, prefixes and we will spend a good amount of time on the history of Thanksgiving. On Tuesday, the 22nd, we will be having a Turkey feast at the school and need donations of canned gravy to contribute to the meal. Please have your child bring in a can if you can afford it. Don't forget that Friday, the 18th, the school is having a Mexican Fiesta featuring a dinner for purchase and Mariachi music. We are excited about it! Please join us!
Mark your calendars because our break begins on the 23rd. No after school that day. Have a super week!

Week 13? What?!

How lucky was I to find this picture? Bats and the number 13.Anyway, this past week we learned some things about bats. For instance, they are not really totally blind and they vary in their food tastes. We had a good time learning about them. We were even able to try out our new projector while watching a film about the little guys.
This week, we will be learning about the human skeleton. I'm hoping to have a chiropractor friend come in and tell us more! We are also working on digraphs, suffixes, and lines of symmetry.
We did some awesome list making this week of things that we would like to write about so we will be doing some of that!
Please remember there is no school on Friday, November 11th in honor of Veteran's Day. Also, very important: Art orders are due by Tuesday the 8th. Please get them in. We've had a very good response from everyone and are looking forward to doing it again next year if all goes well. Have a super 4 day week!

Buckalew, here we come!!! October 24th @ 9a.m.

One week to Buckalew!! We are super excited about our trip and of course, delighted that many of our families are coming with us. If you are coming, remember, you will need to drive behind us in your own cars. With the exception of one or two volunteers we may need on the buses, you are responsible for your own transportation. Your child will have to ride with us unless you sign a release paper. This is also true for leaving Buckalew with your child. All safety stuff!
Harvest Fest is right around the corner! We are in need of lots of candy donations for that night. We will be running a duck pond booth. The little ones loved it last year. Anyone that can volunteer 15-30 minutes, any time at all, will be greatly appreciated! I will be there but would love some company. Our proceeds will go to our classroom I am told. That would be awesome. Maybe we can pay for some more field trips! Sign-ups will be on the hallway bulletin board.
It is a new quarter!! Yay!! This is a quick, but fun one. We will be focusing on plant life, families, american symbols, lots of writing and reading as well as math. Congratulations to all of the award winners. Let me explain that students receiving all 4s receives the Principals award, 3's and 4's combined receives the honor roll award and perfect attendance-well, of course, the perfect attendance award. I expect to see a lot more awards in the next quarter. We have amazing students!!
     Have a super week!

Fall is here!!!!

We can already feel it cooling down out on the playground! I love this time of year.
Thanks for your patience with me last week as I tried to recover from the flu. The voice is almost completely restored. Your child may comment on how Mrs. Nye can't stop coughing!
This week begins our Plant life cycle study. We will learn about different kinds of apples, Johnny Appleseed and the importance of keeping our earth clean so we can continue to grow food.
October is jam packed full of things. Most important, to me is the field trip! Hope you are all planning to pack a lunch for your child and yourself if you are going. Look for the permission slip this week in your child's homework folder. If you are intending to go and take your child from Buckalew Farms, you will need to fill out an additional form that will allow you to do so.
I hope you have a great week! Please spend some time in the cooler air with your child. We have been discussing leaves and the changes in the weather. They love to talk about anything nature!!! Especially, bugs!

Look! Up in the sky!

We are nearing the end of our weather unit in 2nd grade. This week we had a lively discussion about monsoon season. We read the book, "Hip,Hip,Hooray!! It's Monsoon Day!". It was soon followed by a multitude of personal monsoon experiences. Everything from toads, flooding, mud and lightening storms! We all decided that since we had so many stories, we will need to write them all down in our journals on Monday! I'm excited to read them all.
Thanks to everyone who attended parent-teacher conferences. I hope you were happy with the information I was able to provide to you about your student. Please feel free to contact me anytime regarding their progress.
Please keep on your calendar the upcoming field trip. We will be going to Buckalew Farms for a  wagon ride and to pick out a pumpkin. Everyone will need to bring a lunch and a water bottle. The cost is $6 for everyone that comes .  The day for the trip is Monday, October 24th. More info and field trip forms will be coming next week.Check out the Buckalew link to the left of my post.

Scholastic Book Orders!!!

-If you missed our Book Fair, it's your lucky day!! Today I will be sending home several Scholastic Book Orders. There are many books to choose from. There are even books for as cheap as $1. Everytime you order books, our class earns credit for free books. It's awesome. Last year I was able to buy each of my students a book by using these class credits. Return your child's order with cash, check or money order made out Scholastic.
You should have received your child's progress report. That means we are half way through the first quarter. If you haven't scheduled a conference and would like one, just let me know. I will leave the sign up sheet out all week on our bulletin board and check it regularly.
Our centers are working out well. I am very happy with the students and their behavior and respect during the transition! This will enable us to start some reading groups this week.
   Have a super week!!!

Happy September!!

Here comes September!! What a fabulous week we had last week! Thanks so much to all of those that came to our Open House. It was great to see all of you. If you didn't have a chance, please sign up for a parent-teacher conference slot if you are interested. I will be sending out progress reports for the first quarter on Friday. Dig through those backpacks!!    Because I have had some time with your children, I have become familiar with their learning strengths and weaknesses. Now it is time to use this information to divide them into learning centers. I will be arranging their desks into groups. Each group will have about 7-8 students at different levels of learning and reading. This is to promote peer learning and team work. You may have concerns about who your child is placed next to if there have been previous social issues. Please be assured that I am keeping an eye out for any of those issues that might affect your child's learning
Meanwhile, have a super week and remember Heroes Night is this coming Friday. We will be making a poster to share that evening. Bring your child if you can so he or she can share it with you. Also, ask your child what Never Eat Soggy Waffles means!!! Have a good one!

We will have their work on display and a sign up sheet for upcoming parent-teacher conferences.I won't have time to tell you how great your student is doing that night, so please sign up for a future visit. Also, the school is having a hair-cut fund raiser. You can get your hair cut for a donation! Great deal!
Please remind your child to turn in their homework folder on Fridays with their homework in it! We are still learning procedures, so reminders are necessary.

Reading Buddies!!

The most exciting thing we did this week was our Reading Buddy activity with Miss Beebe's 1st grade class.  Everyone had a buddy and read to each other. It was the sweetest sound ever!! Also exciting was the practice fire drill we had. Our class did an awesome job. Everyone remained calm and quiet and walked out of the building safely. Mr. Dye said we did great!  We enjoyed a full week of special classes. We went to P.E., Library and enjoyed our new Art teacher coming to our class.  This week we will meet Ms. Phillips, our counselor, who will teach us about character! Check all of the upcoming dates for your calendar. Have a great week!
